Ideas for a Greece Themed Party

Greece had never performed strongly in major international tournaments until in 2004, somewhat unexpectedly, a Greek team built on teamwork and discipline rather than famous "big name" players, won the Euro tournament.

If you're throwing a Greek party, anything in white and blue is going to be a good starting point, but hopefully you'll find a few more ideas on this page. Greek food is delicious, and although we've only added a few recipes here, we will try to add more when we get a chance.

Food for a Greek Themed Party

Greek food is made for entertaining. So many great dishes, it just cries out for a huge buffet-style party!

Greek food has a very long history, unsurprisingly, and is based on locally available produce; olive oil is key, and meat and fish are important, as are vegetables including tomato, aubergine (eggplant), potato, green beans, green peppers, and onions. Honey is very popular in Greece, and is often honey from the nectar of citrus trees. Greek cuisine uses lots of herbs, particularly oregano, mint, garlic, onion, dill and bay leaves, but also basil, thyme and fennel seed. Many Greek recipes use "sweet" spices - such as cloves or cinnamon - in combination with meat.

Due in part to the rugged terrain, goats and sheep thrive - and are a popular source of milk and meat - more so than cattle.

Drink for a Greece Themed Party

Beer has returned to popularity in Greece, after centuries of being looked down upon. Although international brands dominate the market, strong Greek brands are now emerging, such as Mythos .

Greece has a long history of wine production, dating back hundreds or maybe thousands of years. The best known is probably Retsina, but others are available.

What is easier to get hold of - and perhaps the drink that Greece is most famous for - is Greek Ouzo, an aniseed-flavoured spirit. There are many brands available of course, of which one of the best-known is probably Ouzo 12 .
