Food for an Albanian Football Party

Albanian cuisine is broadly speaking Mediterranean, influenced by Italian and Turkish cooking among others. Meat and fish dishes in particular are flavoured with herbs such as oregano, mint, basil, garlic and rosemary. Vegetables are used in almost every dish, especially peppers, aubergine (egg plant) tomatoes, onions and leeks. Stews are popular, as are oven-baked casseroles and pies. Salads often accompany the main course, and are often simple affairs of tomatoes, cucumbers, green peppers, and olives dressed with salt, olive oil, vinegar and/or lemon juice.

Dairy products are an integral part of the cuisine, especially yogurt, which is used in many sweet and savoury meal recipes and drinks too. Seafood is also popular in the coastal regions.

Although most Albanians are Muslim, few abstain from alcohol completely, and those that do generally accept others drinking. Beer, raki (a local brandy distilled from plums or grapes) and cognac are the most popular alcoholic drinks. For alcohol-free alternatives, strong Turkish coffee , fruit juices and mineral water (which is generally carbonated) are the most popular options. Local buttermilk called dhalle is also very popular.
